Hey guys! Let's talk baby gates!
When do you need one?
Baby gates are generally the most useful between ages 6 months and 2 years (or until your tricky little escape artist learns to climb over it). You'll want to have them installed before your baby learns to crawl.Where do you need to install them?
Anywhere that you want to limit their access--the tops and bottoms of stair cases, the door to a balcony (in case you ever need to leave it open for ventilation), their bedroom or playroom, any doorway to a place that contains items that are not baby safe, etc. What kind of safety gate do you need to purchase?
There are two basic kinds of gates: hardware mounted or pressure mounted.
A hardware mounted baby safety gate comes with a frame that is attached to the walls and the gate is mounted on the frame. This type of safety gate has screws going into the wall to keep the gate secure.
A pressure mounted safety gate comes with a mechanism that expands and presses against two opposite walls. It uses tension between two walls to keep the gate secure. Certain spaces (those without two opposing walls) will not allow for a pressure mounted gate. Other areas (like the tops of stairs) could be dangerous if you use a pressure mounted gate.
What do you need to consider when choosing a baby gate?
- If the gate has vertical slats make sure there is no more than 3 inches between the slats.
- Make sure the gate feels sturdy.
- Buy from a reputable source. Gates should have safety certifications from sources such as the JPMA or the American Society for Testing and Materials.
- If it is a mesh gate make sure that the holes are small enough that little fingers and toes cannot get stuck in them.
- Gates should stand at least 22 inches in height.
- Ask yourself, what does the safety gate need to cover? Some gates can span over larger openings while others only cover a doorway.
Some gates can span very large openings!
- Baby gates come in lots of different finishes and designs so you can find one to match your decor.
- Do you want a gate that requires you to make holes in your walls? If not, there are alternatives.
What do you need to consider when installing a safety gate?
The space between the floor and the bottom of the gate should no more than 3 inches (that way your kiddo will not attempt to climb under it and get stuck). Check out this awesome portable baby gate from NAVIgate for when you are home or even away from home.

***Never rely solely on a safety gate for the safety of your children. Gates are only deterrents. Proper adult supervision is still required.
