I'm not a “frills and ribbons” type of girl and I don't love the color pink. Just not my style. When we found out we were expecting our first little one, I wondered – if we have a girl, am I going to have to do all of those “girly” things with and for her?
Wanting to be true to myself, I decided not to have a frilly, ribbon-y, pink element in our gender reveal party. We replaced things that would be pink with red, but kept the blues. Our wedding colors were red and navy, so to save money we used a lot of left-over items from our wedding as decorations and dishes.
When trying to think of a theme, the only thing I thought that would match the red and blue would be “One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue Fish” from Doctor Seuss. We did our best to make it all work into that theme, which I thought ended up being a lot of fun!
Things that I loved:
- The color scheme and the theme. Dr. Seuss is so fun!
- The decorations. We used some cut outs of Dr. Seuss characters; fun, red and blue swirlies that hung from the ceiling; balloons, chalk boards (for guesses), and other fun things.
- The food. We used red Swedish fish and blue gummy sharks as snacks and as decorations on the cake.
- Getting someone besides me to bake the cake. It made the party more fun and suspenseful for my husband and I because we were surprised, too!
Things that I wish I had done differently:
- Inviting people. My mom usually feels the need to invite everyone she knows to any event, and this was no exception. I also inherited this frustrating trait, making the place much too crowded.
- Have a designated photographer. A lot of the pictures that I thought existed have been lost.
- Shorter window of party time. It almost felt more like an open house than a gender reveal party.
All in all, I loved how the party turned out. I did get a girl, but we've avoided many of the frills, ribbons, and most of the pink :)
